New York is an amazing place. If you love music, you can find a good show any night of the week. The problem for concert photographers like me is that some of the best shows take place in dirty East Village holes with nothing more than a red 50 watt bulb for stage light. Luckily, bad lighting doesn’t stop local groups like Blackbeard from unleashing the dreadlocks and bringing the rock.
Photographer friends often ask me how I can shoot at the very limits of the camera with almost no light. My response is that it’s hard, but often it’s those risky shots, under the worst conditions, that yield the biggest payouts.
Besides, when an indie rocker crawls across the stage in the throws of electrified-guitar-solo-ecstasy and attempts to shred his strings with his 3-foot dreads, I don’t care how dark it is, you suck it in and pull the trigger.
