June 29, 2008 – The innagural 2008 JellyNYC Pool Party at McCarren Park Pool started with a bang, litterally. Lightening came down around the pool, stagehands covered equipment and torrential rain drenched the block-long line of music fans as they waited for 2:30 doors.
Luckily, the rain stopped just long enough for the hardest working band I’ve seen this year, J Roddy Walston and The Business, to take their brand of ivory-pounding, hair-whipping, dirty rock’n'roll all the way to the hole.

The rain and lightening came back for a second round just as hardcore heroes, The Loved Ones took the stage. The Philly five-piece pounded out a tracks from the 2008 release Build & Burn and lead singer Dave Hause thanked the wet (but nonetheless enthusiastic) fans by getting wet with them. Twice.

Reinforcing the messianic status bestowed on The Hold Steady by their large and rabid fanbase, the rain cleared and the sun shone down as NYC’s best party band took the stage.
Craig Finn looked out over the adoring masses.

Pointed and waved this hands a lot.

He gave Tad Kubler a happy birthday guitar solo.

And a couple thousand soggy indie-rock kids went totally apeshit.

The JellyNYC Pool Parties at McCarren Park Pool are free and every Sunday throughout the summer. Come to the next one or I’ll club this here baby seal.

More from the pit next week!

Wow, I thought only bad Canadians clubbed baby seals. Shame on you! :P That said, I have every intention of going to the pool party the weekend I’m down there.
Awesome. Let me know if you want the contacts for pit/backstage access.
Totally unrelated but apparently you met someone who goes to my camp at a show? He said you knew who I was. :P
