Janelle Monae

October 23, 2008 – Put the baby powder on the floor fellas because she’s about to blow this joint sky high. Lilliputian stature didn’t stop afropunk songstress Janelle Monae from burning some floorboards at Bowery Ballroom. Playing to a house full of CMJ concertgoers, Janelle came, saw, crowd surfed and conquered.

Photographer’s Notes:

In addition to being a total sweetheart, Janelle is one of my favorite artists to photograph. Her music is incredibly refreshing and her live performances have the theatrical mistique of a Broardway musical with a whole lot more rockin out (sans the $80 seats too). Janelle gives the energizer bunny a run for his money every single show and still manages to hang around with fans after every show.

I shot almost entirely with the Canon 24-70mm on the 1DmarkIII. The Canon 70-200 made a necessary appearance for the tighter portraits. Fill flash from a single on-camera 580EXII was used for the majority of this set.
