I have just three words to say – Finnish cello metal.

Apocalyptica, the group of classically trained cellists who started out as a Metallica cover band but who went on to the #1 spot on the Billboard USA Rock Chart and eight studio albums, shredded out their NYC co-headliner with Dir En Grey at Nokia Theater in Times Square.

The band has a reputation for putting on camera-candy shows with lots of crowd interaction, cello shredding and tandem hair whip. As the photos show, Apocalyptica did not disappoint.

Photographer’s Notes

The heavy color casts were a bit difficult at times but this is one band that is incredibly fun to shoot – their stage presence is magnetic, they play to the crowd, they have a good time and they don’t take themselves too seriously.

I shot the majority of the show with the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 using the 14-24mm for a few ultawides of Eicca Toppinen and the longer range of the 70-200mm for drummer Mikko Sirén.
