My short portrait session with the lovely Duffy was originally scheduled for 4:45pm which, during November in NYC, is the perfect time for flattering golden hour sunlight. The only problem is that the shoot didn’t take place until 6:00pm – well after sundown. With no time to change locations or set up lights, I was forced to take a shot in the dark (literally).
The exposure for this photo was a setting I usually reserve for concert shooting – ISO1600 and 1/100 using Nikon’s new 85mm wide open at f/1.4. Duffy is lit by ambient light only with a New York City street lamp serving as the key light. Despite the less-than-ideal conditions, I’m pleased with how the shot turned out.

In this case the 1.4 aperture was the difference between “totally workable” and “probable failure” in terms of the shutter speed and ISO it afforded me. The 85mm got me out of a jam and I’m now looking at other primes =)
Cool! I’m working with a cropped sensor so I’m thinking about a Canon 24mm f/1.4 myself, for both portraits and dark nightclubs :P

dude, I think this is strangely one of your best. good stuff. I just rented this lens.
