Nothing rocks a New Jersey parking lot like The Bamboozle. Here’s a sneak peak of Saturday’s lineup including performances by Paramore, Kesha, Angels & Airwaves, Drake, VersaEmerge, Escape The Fate, Something Corporate, The Maine, The Aquabats, Hanson.

Photos: Shred for Your Life
I had the distinct pleasure of covering the sixth annual Shred For Your Life competition at Webster Hall this weekend. Contestants were critiqued by Andrew W.K., Jaleel Bunton of TV on the Radio and Les Savy Fav‘s Seth Jabour. The field varied wildly from adolescent to old(er), from death metal to jazz and from ordinary [...]

Photos: August Burns Red, Night One
If there is any band that rocks too hard, it’s these guys. August Burns Red performed the first of two sold out shows at Nokia Theater in Times Square and I was there. I covered both shows on stage, back stage and from the pit and 1,000 frames later I still feel like I fell [...]

Tibet House Benefit Concert, 2010
The Tibet House Benefit Concert is one of my favorite musical events of the year; it’s one of the few times concert goes get to hear a wide variety of music, including rock and punk performed at Carnegie Hall. For the benefit’s twentieth incarnation, Philip Glass brought together a wonderful lineup including Patti Smith, Iggy [...]

Motion City Soundtrack
Motion City Soundtrack took over The Fillmore at Irving Plaza for a evening of freewheeling punk-pop. The band is currently on tour supporting their fourth and newest release, My Dinosaur Life.

Epica
Simone Simons of Epica performs at Gramercy Theater, NYC (photo by Chris Owyoung) The draw of Epica’s brand of music is the combination of contrasting elements. Like many symphonic metal bands, their songs draw against the brutality of death metal and the melodic qualities of choir and opera. In the later regard, Epica stands well [...]

Vverevvolf Grehv
Vverevvolf Grehv was the single opening act for Skinny Puppy’s recent show in NYC. I found the idea of a one man electro death metal act interesting; even more so when I realized that vverevvolf grehv, (pronounced “werewolf grave”) was the brainchild of Dapose, the guitarist of one of my favorite indie bands, The Faint. [...]

Solange Knowles with Of Montreal
Of Montreal‘s recent show at Highline Ballroom included more than Susan Sarandon spanking a man dressed up as a pig; it included a fantastic guest appearance by Solange Knowles (Solange’s official site), who collaborated with the band on their new album. Here is of of my favorites from the set.

moe.
A few atmospheric shots from the moe. concert at Roseland Ballroom. Don’t let the suits fool you; this show was 150% all-American jam.

Top 10 Concerts of 2009

2009 was a great year to be a music fan and an awesome year to be a music photographer. The ten concerts below rocked fans and photographers alike.

Vic Chesnutt Remembered
Vic Chesnutt’s performance of “Everybody Hurts” at The Music of R.E.M. at Carnegie Hall was one of my musical highlights for 2009. I am saddened by the news of his premature passing yesterday at the age of 45. Video and a photo after the jump.

Brett Dennen
Teaming up with Grace Potter & the Nocturnals on tour, Brett Dennen delighted New Yorkers with his deliberate stage presence and poignant songwriting. Definitely keep your eyes and ears out for Brett, the concert was beautiful.

The Energy
Like so many of their fans, I grabbed whatever was waterproof, braved the storm and caught up with The Energy at Gramercy Theater. Although there were no shotgun portrait sessions this time, there were more than enough great moments during their live set to keep even the hungriest concert photographer begging for more. Photos from [...]

Marié Digby

Earlier this month Marié Digby performed to a sold out crowd at Joe’s Pub. Signed to Hollywood Records and well know for her charming acoustic cover of Rianna’s Umbrella on YouTube, Marié is currently touring with label mates Alpha Rev in support of her sophomore release “Breathing Underwater.” Note: There are 100% crops from the [...]

Grace Potter and The Nocturnals
The only thing better than the music at a Grace Potter and The Nocturnals show is the amount of love in the room (the band has some seriously devoted fans). Grace and the gang performed at Terminal 5 ahead of their next studio album due out in 2010.

Flyleaf
That Flyleaf’s new album “Memento Mori” debuted at No. 8 on The Billboard 200 charts was certainly no surprise to the sold-out crowd at Gramercy Theater. For those of you not at the show, I’ll tell you that if playing your ass off city after city counts for anything, the band’s success is certainly well [...]

Vader
Just a few shots from Vader’s performance at Gramercy Theater. The Polish headliners finished off a great lineup of metal that included awesome sets by Warbringer, Augury and of course Decrepit Birth.

Paper Tongues
One of the things I love most about music photography is the nightly opportunity to discover bands like Paper Tongues; you may not have heard of them but their vibe is infectiously feel-good and their performance dynamic enough to break through the infamous snobbery of the NYC audience.

Cobra Starship

In concert photography sometimes all you need is one photo. Other times, all you get is one photo. In the case of Cobra Starship’s performance at Nokia Theater, one of the only frames that didn’t look like an out of focus black cat on asphalt at midnight came at the only moment Gabe Saporta was [...]

Peaches

What Saturday night would be complete without a round of crowd surfing in a pink pleather bodysuit? Kylie eat your heart out. Peaches performed in support of I Feel Cream at Terminal 5, NYC.

MUTEMATH

When the drummer begins by securing his headset with a roll of gaffers tape, its a good bet that you’re in for a hell of a show. Add to that Paul Meany’s beautiful voice and Roy Mitchell-Cárdenas’ ridiculous bass skills and you’ve got Mutemath in full effect.

A Few from the Circle Pit

Metal is almost a spiritual experience for a lot of fans. Nowhere else is this more evident than in the circle pit. While I don’t recommend that music photographers jump right in unless they a) have both camera insurance and b) feel pretty confident that they can stiff-arm a 175lb dude doing the windmill, I [...]
